The lack of OHS awareness and low or no use of PPEs can have multiple long and short-term effects on the farmers and workers and their families in palm oil fields. Further, these PPE kits have to be specific to the needs of Indian climatic conditions keeping in mind gender-norms.

Workers are exposed to hazardous chemicals in the form of pesticides and herbicides that are used for the cultivation of palm oil like paraquat and glyphosate. For the use of these pesticides and herbicides, proper equipment like rubber gloves, boots, mask, rubber apron are required. However, the palm oil growing regions of India like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are hot and humid. Thus, there is requirement for the PPE to fit the needs of farmers and workers under these weather conditions. Further, the PPE needs to be women-friendly in terms of their ease, comfort and requirements.

Kind of solution required: The overall aim is to find PPE kits that are suitable for the humid and hot weather of India with specific needs of women taken into consideration.
