The workers of the leather tanneries face several challenges in terms of OHS as most tanneries do not offer access to personal protective equipment. For those that do offer PPEs do not witness a rate of usage due to lack of awareness among workers on the needs for them and secondly, due to the prevailing humidity and heat in the factories.
The lack of OHS awareness and low or no use of PPEs can have multiple long and short-term effects on the workers and their families. Workers are exposed to poisonous gases, dust, and hazardous chemicals that are released during the tanning process. These gases and chemicals lead to skin diseases, eyesight problems, respiratory diseases etc. Further, operating the heavy machinery like drums and pulleys can lead to severe injuries and accidents if not protected. The tannery workers are also required to stand in a semi-bending posture handling ng heavy and bulky loads of skin and hide for long hours in a semi-bending posture, and handling.
Kind of solution required
Awareness and sensitization on occupational health and safety measures and leather industry specific PPEs.
